The traditional circular cast net — the vala — has been used by Kerala’s coastal and backwater fishermen for centuries, requiring a throwing technique learned over years that opens the net to its full circular diameter in the air before settling over fish in the shallow water below. The visual moment of the net at full expansion — typically lasting less than 1/10 second — is one of travel photography’s most demanding and rewarding subjects. This photograph was made from a second wooden canoe positioned alongside the fisherman at dawn on a Lake Vembanad backwater, using a 1/1000 second exposure to freeze the net in near-perfect circular expansion. The fisherman is silhouetted against the pre-sunrise pink sky, his complete body in the throwing posture — weight transferred forward, arms extended, the net trailing in a perfect radial geometry. Three days of pre-dawn positioning were required before the throw alignment with the sky was achieved.
