The Amazigh Berber communities of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains maintain cultural and material traditions of extraordinary continuity — the tattooing, silver jewellery, woven textile work, and architectural forms of the pre-Islamic Berber heritage visible throughout. This portrait was made in a village above the Ourika Valley after several days of previous visits that established the trust necessary for an intimate portrait session. The subject agreed to be photographed on the threshold of her home — a position that placed the dark interior behind her and the strong mountain afternoon light on her face from the south. The ornamental silver chest-piece (khalkhal) and nose ring are traditional Berber forms. The photograph required no artificial light modification — the specific quality of High Atlas afternoon sun at 2,200 metres altitude, with minimal atmospheric scattering, produces a crisp illumination quality that reveals fine facial detail.
