Description
Made at the Drepung Monastery above Lhasa at sunset during the losar new year celebrations, this photograph captures an elderly monk in full meditative engagement with his devotional practice — spinning a large gilded prayer wheel whose rotation releases the Tibetan Buddhist mantras inscribed inside into the universe with each revolution. The monk’s awareness of the photographer dissolved completely over 45 minutes of respectful proximity, producing the quality of unselfconscious absorption visible here. The setting sun at 5:30pm in February strikes the maroon robe fabric from the west, producing a deep warmth that renders the colour as almost luminous amber. The prayer wheel’s rapid rotation at 1/250 second creates a soft blur that preserves the sense of movement while resolving the ornamental detail on the wheel body. Available as a 300 DPI digital file and limited edition Giclée print.
