Description
Venice’s Carnival — the Carnevale di Venezia — takes place in the 10 days before Ash Wednesday and represents Europe’s most elaborate costumed festival tradition, with historical continuity extending to the 12th century. The Colombina — a half-mask worn below eye level, leaving the mouth free — is the most refined and elegant of the traditional Venetian mask forms. This photograph required pre-dawn positioning — arriving at a location scouted during an earlier reconnaissance visit — and collaboration with a dedicated costume atelier that provided both the Colombina and the full 18th-century silk brocade gown. The image was made at 6:15am before any other Carnival participants occupied the alley, in the blue hour when the canal reflections in the background carry maximum colour depth. The costume was subsequently returned and the session constituted a legitimate fashion/art photography brief.
