Afghan Kuchi Shepherd — Mountain Passes

The Kuchi are Afghanistan’s principal nomadic pastoralist community — approximately 2.5 million people who follow seasonal migration routes between the winter lowlands and high summer mountain pastures of the Hindu Kush. Their material culture — embroidered and mirrored dress, silver jewellery, tent architecture — represents one of Central Asia’s most visually rich traditions. This photograph was made during a brief period of regional stability with a full professional security and facilitation team, on a high mountain pass at 3,800 metres during the autumn migration season. The subject’s permission was obtained through the team’s Dari-speaking cultural interpreter. The severe mountain light — direct, high-altitude sun with minimal atmospheric scattering — creates a harsh but revealing illumination that matches the uncompromising quality of the landscape and the life it sustains.
