Description
The Sibiu International Theatre Festival attracts Roma communities from across Romania and neighbouring countries who participate in the cultural programme’s traditional music and dance events — providing an accessible ethnographic portrait context for documenting Romanian Roma traditional dress. This portrait was made at the festival’s open-air stage area during a Roma folklore ensemble’s performance break, the subject a singer in full performance costume: the hand-embroidered cotton blouse with characteristic floral and geometric pattern, the layered gathered skirt in contrasting colours, and the elaborate head covering of a married woman in the community’s dress tradition. Shot at f/2.8 on a 85mm prime, the shallow depth of field separates the subject from the coloured crowd behind while retaining enough festival context to communicate the event environment.
