Description
Boxing has produced some of Nigeria’s greatest sports champions — Dick Tiger, Nino Valdes, and a tradition of technical excellence — and the gyms of Surulere in Lagos Island maintain the tradition. This photograph was made in a working-class gym in the early morning when the low angled light entering through the building’s louvred windows creates dramatic sidelight that rakes across the face and upper body. The young boxer — 19 years old at the time of the shoot — was photographed between rounds during a training session using available light only. The combination of the sweat detail, the shadow and highlight play on the facial structure, and the intensity of expression produces a portrait of genuine athletic focus. The documentary-style approach, with no light modification and no direction of the subject beyond positioning relative to the window, allows the image’s power to arise entirely from the subject’s natural energy.
