Harajuku Decora — Tokyo Youth Fashion

599.00 $

A Decora fashion practitioner on Takeshita Street, Harajuku, Tokyo — the maximalist layering of pastel accessories, plastic toys, cartoon hair clips, and neon colours photographed in the sharp natural light of a clear day.

Description

Harajuku’s Takeshita Street has been the epicentre of Japanese youth street fashion for four decades — a compressed market street 350 metres long where independent clothing boutiques, accessory shops, and crepe stands create an environment that has spawned several internationally influential fashion subcultures. Decora — derived from ‘decorated’ — is characterised by the maximalist accumulation of accessories: hundreds of hair clips, plastic toys, cartoon character merchandise, and colourful layering that produces an effect of calculated visual chaos. This photograph was made with the full cooperation of the subject, who spent over two hours assembling the outfit before the shoot. The direct, clear autumn sunlight of Harajuku creates hard shadows that reveal the three-dimensional complexity of the accessory layers, preventing the blurring of individual elements that would occur in flat or overcast light.
