Description
The Tuareg — the Blue Men of the Sahara — are Berber-speaking nomadic pastoralists of the central and southern Sahara, ranging across Mali, Niger, Algeria, Libya, and Burkina Faso. The characteristic indigo-dyed robes and face veil — the tagelmust — are not merely traditional dress but functional clothing, protecting against sand, sun, and wind across landscapes that regularly reach 50°C. The indigo dye leeches onto the skin of long-term wearers, giving them the blue-tinged complexion that earned their European epithet. This portrait was made in the Aïr Mountains of northern Niger with the assistance of a Tuareg guide who facilitated the introduction. The composition isolates the eyes — the only uncovered element of the face — and maximises their intensity by reducing the surrounding landscape to a soft-focus blur of ochre sand.
