Description
Rice cultivation in Laos is practiced on the same seasonal cycle that has governed agricultural life throughout Southeast Asia for millennia — the monsoon-flooded paddies of June and July requiring hand transplanting of pre-grown seedlings from nursery beds to the main paddy fields. This photograph was made in a valley east of Luang Prabang where the paddy fields are bounded by forested karst hills whose grey silhouettes in the monsoon mist create a natural backdrop of depth and scale. The subject’s reflection in the still water between the transplanting rows doubles the compositional impact — the bent figure creating an S-curve from crown to reflection base.
