Description
Mongolia’s relationship with the horse is the defining characteristic of its national identity — the Mongolian horse, a sturdy ancient breed unchanged for centuries, and the Mongolian rider, trained from early childhood in the naadam tradition, constitute one of the most photographically compelling athletic partnerships available anywhere. The deel — the traditional Mongolian wrapped robe — billows dramatically at speed, its vivid colour providing a visual anchor against the ochre and green steppe. This photograph was made during a naadam provincial competition using a 600mm telephoto lens at 1/2000 second — fast enough to freeze the horse’s hooves against the ground at full gallop while the background steppe blurs into a smooth horizontal sweep that emphasises the speed. The extreme telephoto compression places the horizon very close behind the riders, creating the characteristic steppe portrait quality of a subject suspended between earth and enormous sky.
