Description
Thangka painting — the creation of Buddhist iconographic images on cotton or silk — is a contemplative artistic practice that requires 5–12 years of formal study under a master artist (lopen). The images — deities, mandalas, religious narratives — are constructed according to strict geometric proportions described in ancient canonical texts, ensuring that each deity’s body proportions, gesture postures, and symbolic attributes are reproduced with complete doctrinal accuracy. The gilding process — applying thin sheets of gold leaf or ground gold mixed with ox bile to the raised areas of a completed painting — requires extraordinary precision with a brush containing only 3–4 hairs. This photograph was made with the cooperation of a thangka painting studio attached to a Ladakhi monastery, in available studio light supplemented by a single, low-angle fill card that revealed the painting surface detail without destroying the room’s natural ambient quality.
