The Kayapo people of the Brazilian Amazon maintain a tradition of elaborate feather ornamentation whose visual complexity communicates specific ceremonial and social meanings within the community context. The headdresses worn by male leaders at ceremonial gatherings are the most elaborate — combining feathers of harpy eagle, scarlet macaw, toucan, and other Amazonian birds in arrangements that encode community identity and the wearer’s ceremonial role. This image was made at a Kayapo cultural gathering in Pará state with the community leadership’s invitation and ceremonial permission — standard ethical practice for documentary photography of ceremonially significant content.
