Andean Condor — Colca Canyon Thermal Portrait

62.92 د.ك

An Andean condor photographed at wingspan-distance from the Cruz del Condor overlook in Peru’s Colca Canyon — the 3.2-metre wingspan fully extended in a canyon thermal, the 1,200-metre canyon depth visible below the bird.

Description

The Colca Canyon’s Cruz del Condor overlook provides the world’s most reliable close-approach opportunity for photographing Andean condors — the birds use the canyon’s thermal columns on morning sun warming to achieve soaring altitude without wing effort, and the overlook’s position at the thermal’s edge allows wingbeats-distance observation for the 30-60 minute morning thermal window. This image was made with a 500mm telephoto from the overlook wall at 7:30am when a mature adult condor (identified by the white collar and carunculated red head) passed at approximately 15 metres altitude. The 3.2-metre wingspan fills the horizontal frame entirely, the primary feathers at full extension revealing the finger-separation of thermal soaring. The 1,200-metre canyon depth is visible below the bird as layered valley haze, communicating the extraordinary scale of the Colca Canyon relative to the largest flying bird in the Americas.
