Description
Shibori and acid dye techniques produce some of the most complex natural pattern formations in textile art, and this photograph — made on a glass-top table with a backlight positioned below — captures the acid dye bloom from above at the moment of maximum dendritic extension. A single drop of magenta acid dye has been placed on wet cream silk taffeta, and the dye front has advanced along the moisture gradient through the weave structure, creating fractal branching patterns that extend 12 centimetres from the drop centre before the moisture boundary halts the
advance. The backlight transmission renders the silk translucent, the dye concentrations appearing as deep magenta against the illuminated cream silk background. The warp and weft of the taffeta weave are individually resolved at the image’s full resolution.
