Description
Bismuth is one of the few metals that forms naturally occurring hopper crystals — a staircase growth pattern produced when the crystal’s edges grow faster than its faces, leaving hollow recessed centres at each growth stage. The resulting geometric architecture, combined with bismuth’s extraordinarily thin oxide layer that produces interference colours across the visible spectrum, makes it one of the most photogenic crystalline materials available. This image was made at 2:1 macro reproduction with a ring flash diffused through a translucent Perspex dome for even, shadowminimising illumination. The crystal cluster shown was grown over 24 hours from a controlled slow-cooling bismuth melt. The staircase geometry and iridescent surface — simultaneously silver, gold, green, and violet depending on oxide thickness are rendered with complete microscopic fidelity.
