Description
Victoria Falls — locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, The Smoke That Thunders — produces a permanent spray cloud visible 50 kilometres away, and the aerial perspective at optimal altitude captures both the falls and its atmospheric consequences simultaneously. This photograph was made at 300 metres during the April peak flow period when the Zambezi carries its maximum volume, the full 1,700-metre width of the falls in maximum sheet formation. The spray cloud rises to 500 metres above the gorge rim, and the interaction of the spray with the afternoon sunlight creates a permanent double rainbow visible within the cloud. The photograph captures all three elements simultaneously: the white water curtain extending across the full frame width, the spray cloud rising above it, and the double rainbow arc within the cloud. The Zambezi above the falls appears as a smooth dark surface in contrast to the white chaos of the falls themselves.
