Description
The Via Dolorosa — the Way of Sorrow — is the 600-metre route in Jerusalem’s Old City along which Jesus is traditionally believed to have carried the cross to Golgotha. The route passes through the Muslim Quarter’s market streets — entirely shuttered and empty in the hour after dawn before the merchants arrive and the daily press of pilgrims begins. This photograph was made at 5:30am with a permit from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in the complete quiet of the early morning when the stone-paved route has a quality of absolute stillness that its midday tourist crowds make entirely impossible. The oblique morning light enters the passageway from the east between the tall buildings of the Old City, casting long shadows across the stone paving. The ancient stone work — limestone worn smooth by millennia of foot traffic — catches the light in a way that reveals both its age and its continued use.
