Description
The Shibuya Scramble Crossing — the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing — operates on a full scramble cycle that simultaneously stops traffic in all directions and allows pedestrians to cross from all sides and diagonally. During peak hours, up to 2,500 people cross simultaneously at each green phase. The second-floor window of the building on the northeast corner — accessible by purchase of a single coffee — provides the most elevated direct overhead view of the crossing without the perspective foreshortening of a fully aerial shot. This photograph was made at 9pm on a rainy Friday evening — the rain wet-reflecting every neon advertisement screen in the pavement surface, multiplying the visual complexity. A 1/60 second exposure was used to capture slight motion blur in the pedestrian crowd while the reflections and signage remain sharp — creating the characteristic visual density that defines this location’s photographic appeal.
