Description
Bran Castle in the Transylvanian Alps is the most cinematically associated with the Dracula mythology in popular culture — its 14th-century Gothic construction on a 60-metre rocky promontory above the mountain village of Bran matching the genre expectation of the vampire novel’s setting sufficiently that the association has become a marketing identity for the castle. The photographic quality of Bran Castle is at its maximum in winter snow conditions, when the white accumulation on the castle’s slate roofs and the surrounding pine forest creates the visual language of its Gothic-fiction context. This image was made during a January snowfall at midday, the snowfall reducing visibility to approximately 300 metres and the castle emerging from white at the top of its rock with the Gothic towers and chimney stacks clearly silhouetted. Shot at f/8 on a 70-200mm telephoto from the village square.
