Bran Castle — the fortress incorrectly but persistently associated with the Dracula legend — is a genuine medieval fortification constructed in 1388 at the Bran Pass between Transylvania and Wallachia, serving as a customs checkpoint on the trade route. The castle’s architectural character — its crenellated towers projecting from a natural rock outcrop above the pine forest — is undeniably Gothic in the romantic sense, regardless of its fictional associations. This photograph was made from a position in the village below the castle at dusk — 30 minutes after sunset — when the castle’s exterior lighting system illuminates the turrets against the deepening blue sky while the pine forest around the rock outcrop remains dark. The transitional light quality of blue hour gives the castle walls a cold, slightly threatening quality that no daylight photograph could achieve.
