Description
Zanzibar’s Stone Town — Mji Mkongwe — is a UNESCO World Heritage urban ensemble representing the unique Swahili coastal culture that emerged from centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, and African commercial interaction.
The waterfront (Forodhani) faces west, making it a sunset rather than sunrise location for the waterfront architecture — but the eastern approaches by water, arriving from the Zanzibar Channel in the early morning, provide the sunrise perspective on Stone Town’s distinctive carved door facades and square tower of the Old Fort. This photograph was made from a dhow approaching Stone Town from the north at 6:15am — the rising sun catching the old Arab merchant houses from the east, the dhow’s lateen sail still up in the morning breeze, the ngalawa outrigger canoes of the local fishermen visible in the foreground approaching their mooring.
