Description
The Golden Temple in Amritsar operates the world’s largest free kitchen — the langar — feeding between 50,000 and 100,000 people daily without charge or distinction of religion, caste, or nationality. The langar is entirely operated by volunteers (sevadars) from the Sikh community in the practice of sewa — selfless service — and the scale of the operation is extraordinary: hundreds of volunteers working in coordinated teams to prepare, serve, and clean in a continuous cycle from 4am to 11pm. This photograph was made in the main dining hall during a lunch service with access facilitated by the Golden Temple management. The volunteer — in traditional dastar (turban) and apron — is photographed amid the gleaming stainless-steel vessels of the service line, the gold-painted ceiling of the langar hall visible above, creating a portrait that embodies the Sikh principle of equality through shared sustenance.
