The Taj Lake Palace — built as the summer residence of Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1743 on a four-acre island in Lake Pichola — presents the most purely cinematic arrival experience of any hotel in India: guests arrive by boat across the lake, the white marble palace appearing to float on the surface as the boat approaches. This image was made at 5:45am from the hotel’s own boat approaching from the City Palace ghats, the pre-sunrise light producing a warm glow on the marble facade while the Aravalli hills behind remain in blue shadow. The boat’s wake creates a V-shaped disturbance in the otherwise glassy lake surface that frames the approach in a triangular composition. Shot on a 24-70mm zoom at f/8, the full palace facade, its reflection, and the surrounding hills are all captured in the horizontal frame at the distance where the palace-to-reflection ratio is optimal.
