Description
The Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan is the world’s largest camel trading event — up to 20,000 camels traded over five days in November — and the convergence of traders from the Marwari, Meghwal, and Rabari communities in regional dress produces one of the most portrait-rich environments in ethnographic photography. This portrait was made on the trading ground at midday when the light was harsh but the subject’s character was at maximum readability — the deep wrinkles and sun weathering of a lifetime of Rajasthani outdoor trading are fully communicated in the direct light. The red safa turban of the Marwari community tradition frames the face; the silver earrings and the knotted white dhoti identify the subject’s community more specifically. Shot at f/4 on a 135mm prime with a circular reflector providing fill light from below to moderate the harsh sun shadows.
