Description
The tug of war at the Highland Games is the most unambiguously athletic of the heavy events — eight men per side pulling against each other with a 274-metre rope in a direct test of strength, coordination, and technique. The Pitlochry Games in August provides ideal conditions for this photograph: the formal competition teams, the Highland dress of their supporters, and the green Ben-y-Vrackie mountain backdrop create an image that is simultaneously an athletic document and a cultural record. This photograph was made with a 200mm telephoto lens positioned at the side of the rope to show the full length of both teams simultaneously. The chosen shutter speed of 1/500 second freezes the peak of effort visible in the body angle and facial expression of every competitor — while the muscle definition of the effort is resolved in the oblique afternoon Highland light. The teams’ Highland dress supporters visible in the background frame the athletic action in a Scottish cultural context.
