Description
The Nazca Lines of southern Peru are pre-Columbian geoglyphs made by removing the dark red-brown surface stones to reveal the pale yellowish-grey ground beneath — a process that required no construction, only removal of the surface material. The hummingbird, at 93 metres wingspan, is among the largest and most precisely executed of the figurative geoglyphs, and the aerial perspective required to see it is approximately 400–600 metres. This photograph was made at 500 metres directly above the hummingbird’s centre, the full figure visible in a single frame: the rounded body, the long thin beak, the spread wings and tail, and the surrounding network of straight lines that connects the Nazca line system’s figurative and geometric elements. The figure’s construction lines show the underlying geometry — the circles and straight lines from which the curved hummingbird outline was constructed using basic geometric tools.
