The gills of the Amanita genus are among the most architecturally precise structures in the fungal kingdom — free gills arranged in tight, exactly parallel plates radiating from the stipe (stem) attachment point in a pattern of extraordinary regularity. This photograph, made by positioning a macro lens directly below a fresh Amanita muscaria cap in a woodland setting, using a small flash unit positioned at the forest floor to illuminate upward, captures the complete underside gill structure as a radiating pattern of cream-white plates on the red-tinged background of the gill cavity.
