Description
The spherical surface of a dewdrop acts as a convex lens — refracting and inverting the scene behind it into a tiny spherical image within the water’s volume. This photograph, made with a 100mm macro lens and extension tubes at 3:1 reproduction ratio, captures a 5mm dewdrop on a hazel leaf in an English forest at dawn, the entire forest backdrop refracted into the drop as a perfect inverted circular image. The depth of field management at this magnification required a focus stacking sequence of 18 frames to achieve simultaneous sharpness across the drop surface and the refracted image within. An image of considerable scientific interest and aesthetic beauty that has been widely used in optics education and nature photography publications.
