Description
Mumbai’s suburban railway — the Lifeline of Mumbai — carries over 7.5 million passengers daily on three lines across the city, making it the world’s busiest commuter rail system. During peak rush hours — 8–10am and 5– 7pm — the trains achieve passenger densities of up to 14 people per square metre: a physical pressure that requires experienced commuters to ride with practiced techniques of body positioning and crowd navigation. The iconic image of commuters hanging from the open doorways of Mumbai locals — not exceptional behaviour but daily necessity during crush periods — has defined the visual language of the city’s working life. This photograph was made with platform access permission from Western Railway at Dadar station at 8:30am rush — the peak of the westbound commuter density — using a wide-angle lens at a position that captured the doorway overflow passengers against the moving platform environment.
