Description

Leaf skeletonization — the natural process by which bacteria and fungi decompose the leaf blade cells while leaving the lignified vascular network intact — reveals the complete circulatory architecture of the leaf as a delicate three-dimensional network of extraordinary complexity. This leaf skeleton, collected from an autumn woodland floor and photographed on a black velvet surface under directional studio light, was a mature oak leaf whose vascular network contains three distinct orders of branching — the main midrib, the secondary lateral veins, and the tertiary veinlets — all individually resolved in the photograph. The natural decomposition creates an image that simultaneously documents botanical anatomy and creates a work of great transparency and delicacy.
