Description
Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia maintains the most vital living tradition of Celtic fiddle music outside Scotland and Ireland. The island’s Scottish Gaelic-speaking community preserved music and dance traditions from the Outer Hebrides and have continued to develop them independently ever since. The Mabou area is the heartland of Cape Breton fiddling, and the informal pub sessions that take place weekly in the village are the natural environment of the music. This photograph was made during a session with the cooperation of a celebrated local fiddler, using available pub lighting — warm amber tungsten — supplemented by a single positioned light source. The bow arm is extended to full length at the down-bow position, the face showing the characteristic closed-eyed absorption that marks genuine musical engagement.
