A saguaro cactus spine tip photographed at 6:1 macro — the retrograde micro-barbs that make cactus spines difficult to remove visible as regular backwards-pointing spine series along the tapering spine shaft.

Description

Cactus spines are modified leaves — their surface barb architecture making them effective at both penetration (forward direction, no resistance) and retention (backward direction, maximum resistance). At 6:1 magnification, the micro-barb series along a saguaro spine shaft is fully resolved: the primary barbs project rearward at approximately 45 degrees from the spine axis at intervals of 0.15mm, each barb tapering to its own point that is itself too small to resolve at this magnification but visible as a bright specular highlight. This image was made using a freshly removed spine from a saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert, the spine mounted horizontally on a focusing rail with incident sidelight from a LED at 20 degrees from the spine axis. The 60-frame focus stack required to cover the full spine length from tip to base reveals the progressive change in barb spacing along the spine — denser at the sharp tip, more widely spaced toward the base.
