Description
The body scales of the ball python (Python regius) are photonically active — the microscale surface structure of each scale creates an iridescent rainbow effect when examined at close range, a phenomenon known as structural iridescence that is separate from the animal’s conventional banded colour pattern. This photograph, made with a bellows extension system and 65mm macro lens at 4:1 reproduction on a captive educational specimen, captures a section of dorsal scaling at sufficient magnification to resolve the overlapping scale arrangement and the surface microstructure responsible for the iridescent effect. The overlapping geometry and the colour play of the iridescence create an image of considerable material beauty that has strong commercial applications in fashion, material design, and luxury surface reference contexts.
