Description

Chrysomelidae (leaf beetle) elytra produce iridescence through a combination of thin-film interference in the multilayer cuticle and diffraction from the regular pattern of surface pits or ridges that creates a photonic structure. At 5:1 macro, the surface patterning responsible for the diffraction is resolved: the regular array of surface sculptural elements — typically 0.3-0.5 microns in diameter — is just at the resolution limit of optical macro photography, visible as a texture that modifies the light scattering rather than individually resolved. The iridescence produced by this structure shifts strongly with viewing angle: the gold-green central region of the elytra surface visible in the image transitions through blue-green at the elytra edges where the viewing angle relative to the surface changes by 15 degrees. The individual elytra cells and their boundary lines are fully resolved in the image, the cuticle surface showing its biological organisation as a mosaic of cells beneath the iridescent surface.
