Description
The orb-weaver spider’s web is one of nature’s most precisely engineered structures — the radial threads providing tensile strength, the spiral capture threads coated with adhesive glycoprotein droplets that also act as water traps in morning dew conditions. This photograph, made in an English meadow hedge at dawn with a 100mm macro lens and a portable reflector as fill, captures a complete web of approximately 40cm diameter with the full three-dimensional dew load — each of the capture thread glycoprotein droplets individually resolved as a distinct transparent sphere, and the geometric regularity of the spiral architecture visible across the complete web. The directional backlight catches each dew sphere as a point of light, transforming the web into a studded jewel lattice.
