Autumn Forest Patchwork — Vermont Aerial

147.94

An aerial view of Vermont’s mixed forest in peak autumn colour — the mosaic of red maple, orange beech, gold birch, and evergreen spruce creating an extraordinary colour patchwork.

Description

Vermont’s Green Mountains in the second week of October present one of the world’s most celebrated autumn colour displays — the mixed deciduous forest canopy transforming from green to an extraordinary mosaic of red sugar maple, orange American beech, gold paper birch, and yellow tulip poplar, punctuated by the permanent deep green of balsam fir and red spruce. This aerial photograph, made from a light aircraft at 400m altitude, captures a typical Green Mountains hillside composition in which no two trees of the same species are clustered together — the intimate mixing of species creating a colour-by-species mosaic of maximum visual variety and richness.
