Description
Abuja — Nigeria’s purpose-built federal capital, developed from 1979 and designated the official capital in 1991 — is Africa’s most comprehensively planned modern city: designed by the International Planning Associates consortium using a master plan that places government, commerce, and residential zones in distinct sectors connected by a geometric road network. The Unity Fountain at the heart of the Three Arms Zone — the government quarter containing the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, and Supreme Court — is the capital’s central landmark, its illuminated jets representing the unity of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This photograph was made at 9pm from a position on the Three Arms Zone boulevard, using a 70-200mm telephoto to compress the fountain, the surrounding government building facades, and the distinctive quartzite profile of Aso Rock — the granite inselberg that towers 400 metres above the city — into a single frame that distils Abuja’s federal capital identity.
