Description
Zhangjiajie’s quartzite sandstone pillars — the visual inspiration for the floating mountains of the Avatar film — are most comprehensible from an aerial perspective that reveals the full extent of the pillar field and the relationship between the columns and the forest ecosystem they support. This photograph was made at 400 metres from a drone flight during the optimal conditions of a partly cloudy morning: the cloud layer at approximately 500 metres sits just above the tallest pillar tops, and the selective cloud shadows on the forest floor create a pattern of light and dark that emphasises the three-dimensional depth of the pillar landscape. The tallest pillars — some exceeding 300 metres — penetrate the cloud base level, their flat tops disappearing into the cloud layer while their bases remain in the dappled forest light below. The Zhangjiajie National Forest’s subtropical forest canopy covers both the valley floor and the pillar tops in continuous green.
