Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley in winter is the most accessible wolf watching location in North America, and the open valley terrain allows vehicle observation of hunts in progress at distances that permit telephoto documentation. This image was made from the Lamar Valley road during a winter morning hunt — three wolves from the Junction Butte pack in full sprint pursuit of a cow elk across the frozen Lamar River. The wolves are in the relay spacing that characterises pack hunting — not bunched together but distributed in a pursuit formation that allows fresh wolves to take the lead position when the leading wolf tires. The elk is 50 metres ahead and maintaining speed, the hunt’s outcome uncertain at this moment. The open river channel beside the frozen crossing produces steam in the cold air, creating the atmospheric depth that characterises Yellowstone winter wildlife photography.
