Description
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves contain the world’s most photographically documented bioluminescent organism — Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus gnat larva unique to New Zealand that produces its blue-green glow to attract prey insects to its hanging mucus threads. Photographing the grotto requires a long-exposure approach from a silently moving boat: this image was made at ISO 3200 with a 30-second exposure using a 24mm wide-angle lens mounted on a tripod fixed to the boat floor, the boat’s movement carefully suppressed by the guide. The result is a ceiling carpeted in 10,000 individual blue-green points of biological light above the mirror-still underground river. A few individual glowworms near the camera resolve to the naked eye as bright points; those in the distance blend into a galaxy-like field.
