Description
Waimea Canyon on Kauai’s west side is the largest canyon in the Pacific at 16km long, 3km wide, and 1,100 metres deep — carved by the Waimea River through the volcanic lava layers of the island’s ancient shield volcano. Its nickname — the Grand Canyon of the Pacific — is earned: the red-ochre volcanic rock face geology, the canyon scale, and the layered erosion patterns produce a visual character genuinely comparable to the Arizona original, though at a fraction of the scale. The critical difference is vegetation: the moist tropical environment clothing the canyon walls in rainforest green. This photograph was made from Waimea Canyon Lookout after a tropical rain shower that cleared the canyon of the cloud that typically fills it, leaving the walls in sharp relief under post-storm light with multiple temporary waterfalls running on every face and wisps of cloud threading through the side canyons below.
