Description
Petrological thin sections — rock slices ground to 30-micron thickness — transmit light when placed on a microscope stage, and between crossed polarisers, the birefringent minerals in the rock appear in vivid interference colours that serve as identification fingerprints for each mineral species. This image was made at 4× optical magnification of a basalt thin section — a volcanic rock containing olivine, pyroxene, and feldspar minerals — between crossed polarisers with a Michel-Lévy colour chart reference. The olivine crystals appear in vivid yellows and reds, the pyroxene in pinks and purples, and the plagioclase feldspar as grey stripes from its complex twinning pattern. The rock’s interlocking crystal texture — the result of slow cooling within a lava flow — is fully legible in the thin section, the crystal boundaries and cleavage directions clearly defined. The image serves simultaneously as a petrological identification tool and as a vivid
abstract composition.
