The Côte d’Or of Burgundy is one of the world’s most precisely tended agricultural landscapes — vines planted at exact 80cm intervals within rows separated by exactly 1.2m, the whole oriented between 160 and 180 degrees to maximize sun exposure on each south-facing slope. This aerial photograph, made during the second week of October harvest when the leaves are turning from green to gold, captures the repeating vine row geometry overlaid with the copper-brown soil of freshly de-leafed bases. The varying row curvature as the vineyards follow the hillside contour creates a dynamic compositional rhythm of curved parallel lines.
