Description
The Victoria Falls — Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders — forms the world’s largest waterfall sheet, 1,708 metres wide and 108 metres high. The falls are most spectacular at high water — March to June — when the Zambezi is near peak flow and the full width of the falls is active. From the Zambia side, the aerial perspective of the gorge entrance provides a view of the falls that the Zimbabwean viewpoints cannot offer: the ability to see along the length of the falls rather than across the gorge. This photograph was made from the rim helicopter pad approach angle — close enough to resolve individual water curtains yet far enough to encompass the complete width of the falls within a single frame. The afternoon rainbow arc is consistent across the gorge during the dry season months when mist volume is reduced enough to allow direct photography.
