Val d’Orcia — Cypress Road at Twilight

193.60 £

A single-track road lined with ancient Tuscan cypress trees photographed at dusk across the Val d’Orcia’s rolling clay hills — the archetypal Italian rural landscape in perfect evening golden light.

Description

The Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape — a terrain shaped over centuries of deliberate agricultural management into the idealised pastoral scenery that defined Renaissance landscape painting. The cypress-lined roads of the area, planted originally as windbreaks and boundary markers, have become the most iconic element of this landscape. This photograph, made from an elevated position above the road at 20 minutes past sunset, captures the trees as silhouettes against a deep teal sky while residual warm light catches the pale Crete Senesi clay of the road surface. The composition uses the strong perspective convergence of the road and tree lines to pull the eye toward the vanishing point on the horizon, where the last warmth of the day glows orange above the ridge. Shot in mid-November when agricultural activity strips the fields to bare, photogenic clay.
