Tropical Island Ring — Maldives Atoll Aerial

181.40

A nadir aerial view of a small Maldivian atoll — the complete ring of coral reef enclosing a shallow lagoon of turquoise water around a vegetated sand cay.

Description

The Maldivian atolls present one of the world’s most perfectly circular natural landform types — the coral reef ring atoll, formed by the subsidence of a volcanic island beneath a growing coral reef over hundreds of thousands of years. This nadir aerial photograph, made from a drone at 300m above a small outer atoll reef in the Ari Atoll system, captures the complete plan geometry of the coral ring — the white surf break on the reef crest, the turquoise shallow water of the lagoon interior, the dark blue of the ocean exterior, and the small vegetated sand cay at the southern arc. The image functions as a perfect natural geometry study and as one of the defining aerial images of the Indian Ocean.
