Description
The southern loop of the Trans-Siberian Railway around Lake Baikal — the so-called Circum-Baikal historical section — runs for 89 kilometres along a shoreline blasted from cliff and lakeshore between 1901 and 1904, and in winter passes between the frozen lake surface and the dense Siberian taiga in conditions of extreme visual starkness. This image was made from a clifftop position above the track in early February, when the lake surface is frozen to 1.5 metres depth and the temperature was minus 28°C. The express passes below — five green Rossiya coaches and a diesel locomotive — the train small against the scale of the frozen lake extending 75 kilometres to the Buryat shore. Shot on a 200mm telephoto, the compressed layers of track, frozen lake, distant shore, and winter sky create the visual narrative of one of the world’s great rail journeys in a single frame.
