Description
The Cuernos del Paine — three granite and black sedimentary rock spires that form the central massif of the Torres del Paine National Park — photograph best in the brief alpenglow window that precedes official sunrise by 20– 30 minutes, when horizontal atmospheric scattering turns the east-facing granite faces a deep orange-red while the sky remains blue-violet. Lake Pehoe’s position directly in front of the massif provides the reflection that completes the composition. This image was made after hiking to the lake shore at 4am to secure position before first light: the 4-second exposure at f/11 on a 24mm prime captures both the alpenglow on the granite and the mirror-perfect reflection in the windless dawn water. The sedimentary cap rock on the Cuernos — distinctly darker than the white granite below — is clearly visible in the pre-dawn contrast.
