Tierra del Fuego — Beagle Channel Storm Light

1,099.00 د.إ

The Beagle Channel at the southern tip of South America during a clearing Patagonian storm — the channel’s steel-grey water lit by a shaft of post-storm sunlight beneath a dramatic cloud front, the Darwin Range peaks snow-covered above.

Description

The Beagle Channel connects the Atlantic and Pacific at the southern tip of South America, and its position at the convergence of three weather systems — Pacific westerlies, Antarctic fronts, and Atlantic swells — produces the most dynamically changeable weather conditions in accessible geography. The post-storm clearing light of a Southern Cone weather system produces the intense shaft lighting that defines this image: a column of direct sun breaking through the cloud base to illuminate a section of the channel surface while the surrounding water remains in shadow, the Darwin Range peaks rising snow-white above the cloud layer behind. Shot from the Chilean ferry that navigates the channel from Puerto Williams to Ushuaia, using a 70-200mm telephoto handheld from the deck. The 1/1000 second exposure freezes the wave chop on the sunlit section of the channel.
